When Do Children Get and Lose Their Teeth?

One of the most common questions parents ask is when their child should begin getting teeth and when those teeth should start falling out. While every child develops at their own pace, there are general timelines that help parents understand what to expect. Knowing the typical sequence of tooth eruption and tooth loss can help families feel more confident as their child's smile develops.

When Do Babies Get Their First Teeth?

Most babies begin developing their first teeth between 6 and 10 months of age, although some children may get teeth earlier or later. The lower front teeth are often the first to appear, followed by the upper front teeth. Teething patterns vary from child to child, and slight variations in timing are usually considered normal.

What Is the Typical Baby Tooth Eruption Timeline?

Children typically develop 20 primary teeth, commonly called baby teeth. These teeth generally erupt between infancy and approximately 3 years of age. While the exact timing varies, most children have a full set of primary teeth by their third birthday.

When Do Children Start Losing Baby Teeth?

Most children begin losing baby teeth around age 6. The lower front teeth are often the first to become loose and fall out. As permanent teeth begin erupting, the roots of the baby teeth gradually dissolve, allowing the teeth to loosen naturally.

What Is the Typical Tooth Loss Timeline?

The process of losing baby teeth and gaining permanent teeth typically continues until approximately age 12 or 13. Front teeth are usually lost first, followed by the primary molars and canines. Every child develops at a slightly different pace, and minor variations are generally normal.

What If My Child Is Early or Late?

Parents often worry when their child seems ahead of or behind their peers. In many cases, differences of several months or even up to almost 2 years can still fall within the normal range. A pediatric dental evaluation can help determine whether development appears appropriate for your child's age.
